Passport validity rules for Australia

Australia is relaxed on passport validity — but you still need a visa (ETA or eVisitor) for nearly every nationality, and that requires a valid passport to apply.

Editor's notes

Australia: strict at the desk, forgiving at the gate

Australia's official requirement is that your passport is valid for the duration of your stay — no six-month buffer. In practice, Qantas, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Qatar all apply the same rule at check-in via Timatic, so if you're covered for your booked return you'll clear the desk. The bigger problem is the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or eVisitor visa, both of which are locked to the passport number on the application.

Renew your passport after being granted an ETA and it's automatically invalid. You'll need to reapply through the Australian ETA app before departure — approval is usually within minutes but the app rejects some card types and expat email domains, which turns a five-minute job into a next-morning problem. Handle it more than 48 hours before your flight.

SmartGate at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth accepts ePassports from a growing list of countries. The gates read both the chip and the expiry date, and a passport with under a month of validity will fail even if you're only staying two weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need 6 months on my passport for Australia?
No. Australia only requires your passport to be valid for the duration of your stay. There's no 6-month rule for tourists.
Do I need a visa for Australia?
Yes. UK, US, EU and most Western travellers need an ETA or eVisitor visa applied for online before travel. It's quick and usually granted in minutes.
Will airlines let me fly to Australia with a passport expiring soon?
Yes, as long as it covers your stay. But Qantas and some carriers prefer at least 6 months for peace of mind — check your airline's policy.
What if my passport expires while I'm in Australia?
You must leave Australia before it expires. Renewing abroad means visiting your country's high commission in Canberra or Sydney.
