Costa Rica: a short official buffer, but don't ignore airline routing

Costa Rica is less strict than many long-haul destinations on passport validity, but travellers still get caught because their routing is more complicated than the entry rule. The official requirement can be much shorter than six months for many nationalities, yet airlines often ask more questions when the passport is close to expiry.

If you fly through the United States, Mexico, Panama or Colombia, check the transit country as a separate destination. The document check at your first airport may validate the whole itinerary, not just Costa Rica, and a stricter rule on a connection can stop you at check-in.

Costa Rica also commonly asks visitors to show onward travel. If your passport expires soon and you only have a one-way ticket, expect extra questions. A dated exit ticket and a passport that clearly covers the entire stay make the arrival check much smoother.
