Frequently asked questions

Does Italy have the 6-month passport rule?
No — Italy follows the Schengen rule: your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure date, AND it must have been issued within the last 10 years on the day you enter.
What's the 10-year passport rule for Italy?
Even if your passport shows a valid expiry date, the date of issue must be within 10 years of your arrival in Italy. Older UK passports with extra months added on top of 10 years no longer count.
Do UK and US citizens need a visa for Italy?
No — both get up to 90 days visa-free in any 180-day rolling period across the Schengen Area. ETIAS pre-authorisation will be required from 2026.
Fastest way to renew a UK passport for an Italy trip?
Online Premium service: book at a passport office, walk out the same day with a new passport. Costs more than standard but saves the trip.
What if my passport has under 3 months when I fly to Rome?
Italian border police can — and do — refuse entry. Your airline will also reject you at check-in. Renew before you fly.
