Passport validity rules for Italy
Italy doesn't use the 6-month rule — it uses the stricter Schengen 3-month + 10-year rule. Here's exactly what you need on your passport for Rome, Milan, Florence and Venice.
Italy: the Schengen rule most UK travellers still misread
Italy follows the standard Schengen passport rule, which means UK travellers need both three months of validity beyond the planned departure date and a passport issued less than ten years before the day they enter. The second part is the one that causes most denied boarding cases, especially for passports issued before the UK stopped adding unused months from an old passport.
The practical check for Italy is not just the expiry date printed in the passport. Look at the issue date first, add ten years, then make sure your trip starts before that date. After that, count three months from the day you plan to leave Schengen. If either test fails, the airline is likely to block you before you reach Rome, Milan, Naples or Venice.
Italy is also one of the destinations where travellers often combine several countries in a single trip. If you fly into Italy but leave from France, Spain or Germany, the Schengen rule is still calculated across the whole Schengen stay, not just the Italian part. Use the date you finally leave the Schengen Area when checking the three-month buffer.
