Passport validity rules for China

China enforces the 6-month rule and a blank-page minimum, even for short transit visits. Don't get caught at the gate.

Quick answerChina rule

6 months beyond entry. 6 months beyond entry, with at least 1 blank page.

Warning · airline check-in will refuse you

Airlines flying to China check your passport against the 6-month rule the moment you check in. Even if the country itself would let you in, the airline won't board you — no refund, ticket marked used. Here's what actually happens →

Editor's notes

China: six months plus a blank page, even for visa-free transit

China enforces the six-month rule with no exceptions — not for the 144-hour transit scheme, not for the new 30-day visa-free trial for UK, French, German and other selected passport holders, and not for cruise stops. Immigration at Pudong, Beijing Capital and Guangzhou will refuse entry, and airlines have zero discretion at the departure airport.

On top of validity, you need at least one completely blank visa page (not an endorsement page). For anyone still applying for a full tourist visa, the requirement rises to two blank pages because the visa itself takes a full page. Travellers who assume "a few gaps between stamps" is enough get turned away at the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre before they even get to book flights.

If you're using the 30-day visa-free trial, keep proof of onward travel and accommodation on your phone. The trial is generous but the paperwork check at Chinese airports has not been relaxed to match — expect the same secondary questioning as a full tourist arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need 6 months on my passport for China?
Yes. China requires at least 6 months of passport validity from the date of entry, plus 1 blank page for the visa and entry stamp.
Do I need a visa for China?
Most travellers need a Chinese visa applied for in advance. UK, US, Australian and several EU citizens currently get 15–30 days visa-free for tourism under a 2024 trial scheme — the 6-month rule still applies.
What about 144-hour transit?
China's 144-hour visa-free transit policy in cities like Shanghai and Beijing still requires the 6-month rule and 1 blank page.
Is the rule strictly enforced?
Yes. Chinese immigration enforces validity, blank pages and onward-ticket requirements at every port of entry.
