How to fast-track a passport renewal when you've left it too late

Same-day, one-week and emergency passport options for the UK, US and EU — what they cost, what's possible, and what isn't.

Your passport is short, the trip is booked, and the standard renewal won't come back in time. Most countries have a faster lane — but they fill up early and cost a lot more.

UK: Premium and Fast Track

HMPO offers two paid services for urgent UK renewals:

  • Premium 1-day service (£222) — you collect a new passport at the appointment. Available at 7 passport offices.
  • Fast Track (£178) — new passport posted within a week of your in-person appointment.

Both require an in-person appointment booked at gov.uk. Appointments often book out 2–3 weeks ahead, so check availability before relying on this option.

US: Expedited and Life-or-Death

US options:

  • Expedited service ($60 extra) — 2–3 weeks total.
  • Urgent travel appointment (within 14 days) — book at a Passport Agency or Center. Limited slots.
  • Life-or-death emergency — same-day service for proven family emergencies abroad only.

EU & UK abroad

Once you're outside your home country, emergency travel documents are issued by your embassy or consulate, typically valid for a one-way trip home. They are not full passports and won't get you across multiple borders.

The honest advice

Use the free passport tracker to set a renewal reminder 10 months before expiry. Fast-track exists, but it's expensive, time-consuming and not always available when you need it.
