Mexico: validity is easy, the FMM is where people slip up
Mexico only requires your passport to be valid for the length of your stay, and immigration officers at Cancun, Mexico City and Los Cabos apply that rule strictly to the letter — no informal six-month buffer. What has changed recently is the paperwork. Mexico phased out the paper FMM tourist card at most air arrivals in favour of a stamp showing the number of days granted.
Don't assume you'll get 180 days automatically. Officers at Cancun and Tulum have been giving as little as 15–30 days to travellers who can't clearly show onward tickets and accommodation, and there's no appeal at the airport. Print your return flight and hotel bookings before you land, especially for long stays or one-way itineraries.
If you fly onward to the US from Mexico, the US six-month rule (or the UK/EU/AU/NZ waiver via the "six-month club") applies at the connecting airport, not at your Mexican entry. Passengers routing Cancun-Miami-London have been denied boarding in Cancun for a US-related validity issue they didn't realise applied.
