Passport validity rules for Türkiye

Turkey has two passport rules to clear: 150 days of validity beyond entry, and the same 10-year rule the EU uses. Both catch British travellers out every summer.

Quick answerTürkiye rule

6 months beyond entry. 150 days beyond entry, issued within last 10 years.

Warning · airline check-in will refuse you

Airlines flying to Türkiye check your passport against the 6-month rule the moment you check in. Even if the country itself would let you in, the airline won't board you — no refund, ticket marked used. Here's what actually happens →

Editor's notes

Türkiye: 150 days plus the ten-year rule

Türkiye applies an unusual rule: your passport must be valid for at least 150 days (five months) from your date of entry, not six as commonly assumed, AND it must have been issued within the last ten years. The 150-day count is why some travellers with a five- and-a-half-month buffer sail through Istanbul while others expect a rejection.

The ten-year rule mirrors the EU's, and for the same reason: it's an EU-aligned requirement adopted in 2018. Older UK passports with 10-years-plus-extra-months expiries fail it. Turkish Airlines applies both rules at check-in, and Istanbul and Antalya immigration will refuse entry to a passport issued more than ten years ago even if the expiry date is more than five months away.
