Frequently asked questions

Do I need 6 months on my passport to travel to the USA?
The US technically requires 6 months of validity beyond your stay, but the US is part of the 'six month club' — citizens of around 80 partner countries (including the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, NZ and Japan) only need a passport valid for the duration of their stay. Check your specific nationality before you travel.
What is ESTA and do I need one?
ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is required for citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries flying to the US. It must be valid for the duration of your stay, not your passport's full validity, and costs $21.
Can I enter the US with a passport expiring soon?
If your country is on the 'six month club' list, you can enter the US with a passport valid only for the length of your stay. If not, you need 6 months of validity beyond your intended stay.
What if my passport expires while I'm in the US?
Airlines may deny boarding if your passport expires before your scheduled return. Renew before you fly, even if technically the 'duration of stay' rule applies.
