How long does a UK passport renewal really take?

HMPO quotes 3 weeks, but reality varies. Here's how to plan around it without missing your trip.

HMPO's official quoted turnaround for a standard online UK passport renewal is 3 weeks. Most renewals do come back within that window. But "most" isn't "all", and the queue lengthens during spring and early summer as everyone realises their passport's about to expire.

Standard online renewal

  • Cost (2026): £100.50 online for adults.
  • Time: 3 weeks quoted; 2–6 weeks realistic.
  • Catch: if HMPO needs extra checks on your application (name change, lost passport, first adult passport), expect longer.

One Week Fast Track

  • Cost: £193.50 online + booked appointment at a passport office.
  • Time: 1 working week after your appointment.
  • Catch: appointment slots are limited. In peak season they get booked weeks ahead — defeating the point.

Premium (same-day) service

  • Cost: £231 online + in-person appointment.
  • Time: 4 hours, collected in person.
  • Catch: only available for renewals (not first-time, lost, stolen, or under-16s). Same appointment-slot scarcity problem.

Practical advice

  1. Renew at 9 months remaining. Don't wait for the 6-month mark. You don't lose the unused months — HMPO simply issues the new passport for 10 years from the new date.
  2. Check your old passport's issue date if you've been carrying it since before September 2018 — see the EU 10-year rule guide.
  3. Apply online, not by paper. Paper applications add weeks.
  4. Photo: use the HMPO digital photo upload via your phone — saves a trip to a Post Office photo booth and reduces rejection rate.

If your trip is in less than a week

The Premium service is your only realistic option, and only if you can get an appointment. Otherwise: change your travel dates. It's cheaper than the fine for being denied boarding plus a wasted booking.
